Q: Can you please provide dimensions of magnet including smallest pin length that device can accommodate. My brooch has a diameter of 10mm with a pin length of 17mm. Thank you.

Asked by: Jackie - 3/27/2023
A: Jackie,

The magnapin is 12mm wide/high. I'm not sure how you are measuring your brooch but if it is really only 10mm then the magnapin would probably peek out a bit since it is 12mm.

I cannot provide exact measurements of all the pins that would fit it since it also depends on the pinstem, where the hinge and catch are located and how much clearance there is between it and the back of the brooch. But usually if a brooch has a pinstem long enough to accommodate 12mm with some room left on the sides, it will fit.

Sincerely,

Q: Years ago owned one. Thought it came in two sizes. Need for large pins 2x2in . Is this proper size? Thank you P.S. I prefer no returning.

Asked by: Diane - 9/27/2022
A: Diane,

Genuine magnapins only come in the one size. It should hold a 2x2 pin as long as the pinstem is not too fat and is about the thickness we recommend. Depending on the pin and the orientation of the pinstem, you might need to use a stabilizer on both sides like the silicone pin keepers we offer in the supplies section (some folks use little pieces of erasers or even a make-up sponge as needed). Every pin is different so there is sometimes some trial and error involved.

I'm not sure what product you might have purchased before since I am unfamiliar with it.

Sincerely,

Q: What diameter pin will go through the hole? Thank you

Asked by: Carmel - 5/3/2022
A: The Magnapin will fit modern pinstems which run about 0.028mm or 21 gauge. You can probably go up a wee bit bit thicker once you stretch the rubber out a bit. Handcrafted pinstems or antique pieces that are thicker would most likely be too big.

Q: Bigger brooches have thicker pinstems. Will they fit in the Magna Pin?

Asked by: Teresa Bown - 11/19/2021
A: The clutch mechanism for a magnapin is rubber. It will fit the standard gauge of pinstems but thicker than normal ones will probably be very difficult to push through it. It could damage the rubber inside.

For those large gauged pinstems that you do not wish to wear as a brooch that pierces the fabric, I would recommend one of the plated pin to pendant convertors. Those converters have a larger sized opening so you could easily wear them as a necklace. We have them in various colors and styles in the Jewelry convertors gallery of the website.

There are also jumbo sized glue on magnet findings that you can attach to the back of larger brooches. But it would be permanently glued onto the back. We do not stock those findings at this time.

Q: Will the strength of the magnet interfere with cell phone battery or the magnetic strip on credit cards? I like to attach pins to my cloth Vera Bradley handbags.

Asked by: Janet - 9/24/2021
A: These magnets are pretty powerful. Since credit cards may be de-magnetized by strong magnets depending on lots of different factors (material, distance from the magnet, length of time of the exposure etc.) it is difficult to say if the placement of these on your bag will be an issue. If it is far enough away it should be OK but there would be some risk involved if it is not. So I would err on the side of caution and not put these on a purse.
