Raijin is one of the most feared Japanese deities and is depicted with a demon-like face. He is the god of lighting, thunder and storms. Here he is shown holding a double sided hammer which he uses to strike drums to create thunder. Raijin is also revered as a powerful protector often used to protect gates of temples and shrines. He is also the bringer of rain for an abundance of fertile crops.
