If you make jewelry, you know how the price of silver and gold has simply skyrocketed! This means the amount paid for melting down gold and silver objects, silverware, and jewelry has also gone up.
This has been a real problem for antique watch collectors because the amount that folks are willing to pay for gold or gold filled watches is less than what you can get for melting them down. Sadly, in today's economy this is happening more often.
We've been seeing cash for gold sign holders on just about every corner of main streets for a long time here in Colorado. Now I am starting to see signs for cash for costume jewelry! EEK! How much money can you get from melting down gold or silver plated items?
I love jewelry. All jewelry from all eras. I'm always amazed at the workmanship or the materials used and I can appreciate the time it took to make each piece. So my personal quest to save as much vintage and antique jewelry as I can from being melted down for scrap has gone into overdrive. Even if I have jewelry that is imperfect, or there's only parts, I am going to either see if I can repair it, re-purpose, or sell the parts in lots for assemblage projects or re-purposing here on the site.
Fellow jewelry designers and jewelry lovers- Lets show everyone how wonderful and inspiring vintage and antique jewelry can be! Save it from the smelters! It is a history worth preserving.
